A Matlacha man whose girlfriend died in a boating accident was sentenced Monday to a year in jail and 15 years of probation for boating under the influence of alcohol/ manslaughter.

Dennis Plourde, 55, was arrested after crashing his boat into a slow-speed zone marker in Matlacha Pass on May 26, 2001.

Jill Carl, 47, was killed.

An investigator wrote in his report that Plourde admitted he was driving the boat when the crash happened. But after he was charged, Plourde began claiming Carl was driving.

Plourde admitted his guilt Monday as part of a plea agreement with the state.

Lee Circuit Judge James R. Thompson gave Plourde a 15-year suspended prison sentence, which means after Plourde is released from jail he'll be on probation for the remainder of the 15 years.
