Trustees get no wake options

Sandusky Township trustees have options to control boating on the Sandusky River short of establishing a no-wake zone, according to a representative of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Watercraft.

The official, David Miller, met with the trustees Tuesday night to go over possible solutions to a potential safety hazard near the Fremont Yacht Club. About 30 residents also attended the meeting to oppose a no-wake zone.

Members of the yacht club requested the no-wake zone last summer to prevent liability if someone gets injured on the river. Opponents think it would unnecessarily restrict recreational use of the waterway.

They also contend trustees Mike Hetrick and Phil Willis, who are also members of the club, are trying to use their position as trustees to push their own agenda. The proposed zone would stretch along the east side of the river near the club's docks.

Phil Miller, of the Division of Watercraft, discussed numerous options but cautioned that the final decision will rest with the trustees.
